Washington DC Rotary Club Member, Sofia DeMartino

I am a relative newcomer to the area, having arrived from Iowa in August. I have a decade of experience working in social services, and have recently joined Boys Town Washington DC as Development Director. I hope to share with your club my own story of the arduous climb from poverty to community servant, and the importance of the social support network that is the reason we have all joined Rotary in the first place.

In April, I had the opportunity to experience RLI – the Rotary Leadership Institute. I spent two evenings engaging with members of Rotary clubs both near and far.  We covered history, mission, local and international service projects, and more. What I found particularly meaningful was the opportunity to discuss the role of identity – both our shared identity as club members, and the components of our individual experiences and value systems that led us to join and collaborate with our neighbors for the greater good.
